
Nike has created a new performance hijab for female Muslim athletes. The sports-gear company will soon release the product in the market. The head cover is called Nike Pro Hijab.
Nike Pro Hijab: The Product
The product bears a single-layer design which can be pulled on. It is made of lightweight polyester and sports dark neutral colors. The Pro Hijab’s fabric has got tiny holes which will make the product breathable.
The product will be totally opaque and absolutely fits the requirement of Hijab-wearing women. The product was designed after female Muslim athletes complained about wearing scarfs during sporting events.
According to CNN Money, Nike took almost thirteen months to come up with the design of the product. The company will release the product for sale during its spring 2018 season. Nike has not yet confirmed the price or where the athletic wear will be available.
However, it can be available in every Nike store throughout the world after its release.
The company mentioned that Emirati figure skater Zahra Lari is already wearing the hijab. She said that she was amazed and became emotional after she saw that Nike was prototyping a Hijab. She also stressed that during her sports performances, she had tried almost all forms of hijabs, but none of them really worked for her. “But once I put it on and took it for a spin on the ice, I was blown away by the fit and the light weight,” Lari said.
Nike claimed that although the Pro Hijab has been under construction for almost a year, the source of the product went back further in the past. According to CBS Local, Nike informed that there was a shift in the cultural stance which made more Muslim women embrace sports. “This movement first permeated international consciousness in 2012, when a hijabi runner took the global stage in London,” Nike stated.
The product has the signature white Nike swoosh and is made for “optimal function.”
Nike Pro Hijab: Controversial Advertisement
The Pro Hijab strategy surfaced after Nike released a controversial advertisement in the Middle East.
The advertisement shows five brilliant and established female professionals from various regions of the Arab world. They are pursuing their athletic dreams. In the advertisement, a voice asks: “What will they say about you?”
Moreover, this is a very rhetorical question that several young Arab women encounter after they go beyond their cultural and traditional boundaries. After the release of the video, it went absolutely viral on social media and generated million views.
