Bullies kept picking on six-year-old boy, Gage Berger for his “Elf Ears.” Due to this, Berger underwent a plastic surgery and is now happy with the result.
The first grader boy was often bullied because of the size of his ears, which were bigger than normal. According to Little Things, Berger’s classmate specifically named him “Elf Ears.”
Parents frightened of effects of bullying
Kallie and Tim, the parents of the bullying victim Gage Berger, were worried for their son. They were afraid that it would affect Berger’s mental health.
According to a Pediatrics-issued study, bullying or the act of harassing or tormenting someone may result in the loss of self-worth, feelings of depression and physical or mental damage. So, to prevent this, the study suggested that it should be dealt with at an early stage.
School guardians are responsible for protecting the students. It also stated that parents have a role to play, as well.
Not to mention, there are three research-based strategies that parents could teach their kids. It included the so-called playing the “I am Someone Who…” game, reading affirmative books and being a positive model.
For the mentioned game, the kid and his or her parents would take turns to complete the given sentence. Like, I am someone who… loves music. Apparently, it taught kids to value their unique traits and love them.
The game is claimed to be helpful to kids in terms of building self-confidence.On the other hand, reading the right books and being a positive role model is aimed at making children see the good side of things.
Six-year-old underwent surgery
While in Tim and Kallie’s case, they deemed surgery as the best solution. After the two-hour cosmetic surgery, Dr. Steven Mobley revealed Gage Berger’s ears.
“Oh my gosh” Berger exclaimed as he looked at the mirror. The boy who was often bullied would no longer be referred to as “Elf Ears” because his previously large ears are gone.
Berger now has smaller ears and the young boy is filled with happiness. Will parents do the same thing for their kids if bullied at school because of appearance?
