Mark is a homeless man who spends some of his time going around town and collecting recyclables. While on his bike making his rounds one day, he heard a strange noise come from behind a wall. When he came to inspect, he found that the noise was coming from a baby crying.
The baby was helplessly crying behind a wall of a parking lot somewhere near a busy intersection. As he followed the sounds he found out that the baby is a girl, abandoned and wrapped with no more than a blanket to keep away the cold.
Mark acted fast and intended to take the baby to a hospital. However, on his way there he found another homeless man, Vance, who convinced him to take the baby to a nearby fire station instead. In shock, Vance also noticed that the baby was probably no more than a few hours old, as they could both still see the blood stains that marked the baby’s recent birth.
Response by the Los Angeles County Fire Department was commendable. As soon as Mark arrived and the people there understood the situation, paramedics rushed to bring the newborn to the hospital. As the baby received care, her condition immediately stabilized.
Woman Steps Up to Claim the Baby
This was all contained in a police report of the incident. Surprisingly, the reports also stated that there was a woman who approached the police shortly after the baby was taken to the hospital. The woman claimed that she “assisted” the mother in giving birth.
What was suspicious is that when the woman stood up after giving her statement, the police noticed blood on her chair. This led them to suspect that the woman did not just “assist” but is, in fact, the one who gave birth.
A quick check-up with a physician revealed that the woman indeed recently gave birth. She was then admitted for treatment, and reunited with her child. Both mother and child are reported healthy, thanks to the homeless man and his eagerness to act.
