Siblings have finally reunited with a Prince George’s County firefighter who saved their lives nearly 60 years ago. Thanks to Facebook, Michael and Linda located Edwin Stuart “Stu” Newman, Jr. and thanked him for his bravery.
Nearly six decades ago, Michael,3, and Linda,2, were grieving with their parents as their younger sibling, Patrick, had died a few months earlier due to infant death syndrome. Then, in August 1959, a fire suddenly erupted in their house.
A massive fire broke out in Hyattsville, Maryland
The kids were asleep upstairs and Mr. Hart was at work when the fire broke out. Their mom, who was doing the laundry downstairs at that time, ran out of the house to search for help.
An off-duty police officer was the first one who came to rescue. He positioned a ladder against the window of the house and used it to climb inside. He located Linda and quickly took her out of the burning house.
Shortly after, Chillum-Adelphi firefighters arrived with Sgt. Carl Hartman and Firefighter Edwin Stuart “Stu” Newman, Jr. Hartman and Newman used the ladder to climb inside the house and search for Michael.
Newman found Michael and gave his breathing mask to the toddler. The toddlers were rushed to a hospital where they received the necessary treatment.
They never heard the names of their rescuers
The toddlers were saved but they never learned the names of the brave men who saved them. Nonetheless, they did not forget the two men.
In 2016, the siblings tried to locate their saviors and found an old newspaper where they read about their story. They also found out the names of the two firefighters and used Facebook to find them.
After the long search, Michael, 61 and Linda, 60, finally met their rescuers and said thank you to them personally. Hartman, however, is dead but 84-year-old Newman, who handed his breathing mask to Michael, walked across the apparatus bay at Station 34 on Riggs Road.
Chief spokesman for the Prince George’s County fire department, Mark Brady said he saw the siblings’ note and called Newman right away. “Everybody in the fire service for any amount of time knows Stu Newman,” he said.
Linda said she was really happy to finally meet the men who changed her life forever. Meanwhile, Michael said that although he did not know the names of the men who saved him, he knows very well that he owes them his life. He further said that he is hopeful that they could be friends forever.
