One would think it is the end of the road for them when they are diagnosed with a terminal illness. However, Greg Thomas’ story shows that serving the Lord through any means can heal a person physically.
Greg was 57 years old and was diagnosed with stage 4 head and neck cancer. The doctors said that he only had a few months left in him and that his family should start planning a funeral. Greg had come to terms with his illness and to make the time more bearable, he would go on walks with his dog.
One day, however, Greg decided to walk down a different path with his dog. They came across an abandoned church that was built by Czech settlers more than a century ago. Greg noticed that the church was deteriorating from lack of maintenance.
The paint was peeling off the wood, the roof was worn out and the floor was crumbling as well. No one had come to the church for 70 years. Greg sat down on the church’s steps with his dog and started to pray.
Making the Church Great Again
As Greg continued to pray, he felt an urge to go inside the church. When he entered the place of worship with his dog, he suddenly knew that there was something he had to do. Greg wanted to restore the church.
Even in his weakening state, Greg knew that he had to bring the church back to its former glory. He decided to work on renovating the building in between his cancer treatments. The effects of the treatments cost him his salivary glands as well as his teeth.
Although Greg may not have any family ties with the old church, the people who do are thankful for what he has done. A few years later, a miracle happened. Not only has the church been brought back to its former glory, but he started to heal as well.
Greg said that this is his way of not only serving the Lord but also his way of thanking Him for the healing he has received. Now he can pray inside the church whenever he wants.
