With the help of Habitat for Humanity, a family who battled poverty and tragedy will no longer sleep in a garage. The family of four moved to their new house, thanks to their hardworking mom.

Rina Dixon asked for nothing but just to have a complete family. However, her husband was murdered in 2007. The tragedy left her alone to raise her three children.

Sacramento woman worked hard to provide her children good life

To support her kids, Dixon worked as a full-time receptionist. She then moved her family into public housing. But she feared for their safety after they witnessed shooting during their brief stay at the area.

So she moved her kids into the 200 square foot garage, which was attached to her mother’s house. Dixon and her two sons shared a bed while her daughter slept in the living room.

In 2013, Dixon’ application to Habitat for Humanity program was accepted. From then on, she worked the required 500 hours in “sweat equity” to build her own house. Building her home became her third job for the past three years of her life.

Her kids became her strength

Dixon did not mind the sunburn, dirt, tears and sweat. For her, seeing her kids was more than enough to keep her going.

Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity, Rob Keth said he witnessed how Dixon worked hard to build her house. He said that Dixon’s perseverance was fueled by love and hope.

After the long years of hammering and painting, Dixon finally got the keys to her home. The organization handed her the keys after she completed the required hours of work.

Now the family is living comfortably to their own home. “Having their own rooms, decorating their own rooms having their own space, going from a converted garage to a home is amazing,” Dixon added.
